A dose of the prescription sleep aid Ambien had the opposite effect on one French woman, awakening her from a two-year coma. The 48-year-old woman suffered from akinetic mutism -- a sort of persistent coma in which the patient is alert but can neither speak nor move.

Okay, why were they trying to give a sleep aid to a patient in a coma... and how could she have insomnia if she were in a coma... are these french doctors that stupid or were they just trying to help her finish the suicide she started.

  From my understanding she was in a half coma. She couldn't move or talk but i believe that she actually had periods of awakness and sleep. Except during the periods of bieng awake she wasn't able to function.
