Two astronomers in the Netherlands say the explosion was the result of a cosmic pile-up: dozens of massive stars crashing into each other, producing a monstrous heavyweight star that eventually exploded, leaving a giant black hole in its wake.

It's very interesting to see two very different accounts on this subject. One one hand, scientists believe this is the death of an incredibly massive star suffering multiple collapses , and on the other they believe this is caused by a massive collapse of a group of stars. Very different opinions.
