"The red planet will shine brighter because it will be directly opposite the sun, reflecting the most light, and fairly close to Earth, only 55.5 million miles away. The full moon will appear nearby, rising about an hour later, said Horkheimer, host of the public television show "Star Gazer."

"Mars will outshine the brightest star and won't be as noticeable in the sky for nine more years, Horkheimer said. The Hubble Space Telescope took a picture of Mars, which came closest to Earth on Dec. 18, but it will be brighter on Christmas Eve because of its position opposite the sun."

Santa never DID need Rudolph. I have it on good authority that dealing with all those damn elves has put Santa in Betty Ford more than once -- and HIS nose is a much brighter red than Rudi's anyway. {;>D)=

        I have a serious question:

If Mars is now at it's closest approach to Earth, why in the hell don't we have AT LEAST a bunch of spacecraft - if not quite yet astronauts - just about to land there? Man oh man. We are (apparently) perfectly willing to spend most of a $ trillion to kill Iraqis and others, but we can't spare a few measly billions to send some people to the next planet to see if there's any oil THERE? Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Joe - It's not quite as simple as you think....

Check the distances involved.... If you could travel at escape velocity (approx 17,000 MPH) it would take (in a straight line course, if such existed) approx 135 days...

Don't get me wrong, I personally think that if man doesn't go for the planets / stars, it hasn't got much hope !!!

As for oil, that'd require some form of biological life to have existed........

Perhaps if we were to send a few politician-bodies there they could be reunited with their heads.

Sorry but this is old news .

Mars could be impacted by asteroid , is the new news 1 in 75 chance .

Kind of corny caption , although bright the Moon is still the dominant object in the sky right now .

            Keep looking up , J.H. says .

Look at Orion's sword one of the not so bright dots of light in his Sword is actually a galaxy .
