It was theorized that if man could heat up the planet Mars, the release of the carbon dioxide from the ice at the South Pole of Mars could thicken the atmosphere of Mars to increase the planets ability to support life. The Mars Global Surveyor satellite has revealed that the ice at the South Pole is mostly water ice, and not carbon dioxide ice.
