I was going to submit this story a couple of days ago, but I actually used the "check this story" button at the bottom of the page.
But "ubercontributors" DON'T do this... they need to feed their propeller egos, rather than actually share something NEW with everyone.
DON'T vote this story! Sink it! Maybe vote the earliest of these:

I'm starting to see how propeller works... big contributors spin it in the direction that takes it NOWHERE, man.

I've done this to other people too. Always unintentionally, but sometimes I don't catch it in time, or the Check Story page doesn't show anything similar until after I post it. It'd be nice to be able to un-submit a story within the same amount of time as editing comments.
And the social part of this equation matters too. There are some members who can post a recipe for jello and it will make the home page. Friends and participation help, otherwise this would simply be a news portal.
Finally, yes, if more diligence were taken prior to submitting, less duplication would occur. I've held off submitting many stories ("Hold off more!" the crowd shouts) that although not duplicates, were close enough in content that it seemed repetitious.
Accident. Popularity. Carelessness. Any of these could account for why duplication occurs.

It should be noted that frequently "Check this" doesn't show the same info as what you get once the story has been submitted.
Propeller does not allows editing after the story is posted, unlike (a few) other sites, so once it's there, it's there.
Those who watch me carefully probably recognize I post less dupes than others. At least I try. Sometimes I'll see it later, but what can you do? Nothing without post-editing.
Example: I have passed on 6 stories today already as dupes.

Perhaps the alien who receives it will despise the Beatles and be a Led Zeppelin fan.

Words are flying out like
endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting through my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om = I give thanks to my heavenly teacher.
The pictures from space of galaxies and stars being born and dying brings tears to my terrestrial eye balls. I am humbled.

It's not intentional maybe... cool down and relax. The story is good.
