I believe the growth is caused by toe-nail fungus, brought unnaturally out of the darkest roting floors of rain forests by human soldiers during various wars and then transmitted varieties to EVERY animal on Earth (mankind HANDLES literally every type of animal even in the "wild") and to ecosystems not designed for it.
I also believe thickening-fungus is responsible for the fatal overly large beak deformations of Eagles and Hawks.
Baby birds can't rub ointment on their beaks or take pills.
Man kind of sucks.
