Science – Albert Hofmann, who died on Tuesday aged 102, synthesised lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in 1938 and became the first person in the world to experience a full-blown acid trip.
Lemme see ... First Propeller puts Prince's greatest hits on the "anchors recommend" section the other night. Now it's a barely newsworthy story about the inventor of LSD dying. Only on Propeller! LOL
Yeah, nice one, Neophile! This guy did SOOOOO much to advance humanity! LOL
lol yeah, poor dear. James Marcus has a pretty good sense of news judgment. Neophile, Aidenag and a couple others just get paid to push their agenda. Sad waste of AOL dollars.
Maybe this guy was a contributing member to the IPCC reports.
If you read the article, you'll see Dr. Hofmann was a research chemist for a drug company looking for useful medicines that could be extracted from plants. He was not a proponent of recreational LSD use.
Hofmann's autobiography can be read in full here:
http://www.psychedelic-library.org/child.htm
But regardless of whether you approve of its uses or effects, you have to admit that the discovery of LSD had a profound influence on American culture, and likely that of the rest of the world as well.
Not just any drug company, Sandoz Labs. But then, idiots will be idiots, at least they're amusing themselves... apparently it doesn't take much.
Hoffman is also credited with several other discoveries; not like the guy in Breaking Bad died. Hell, I was surprised to read this, I didn't even know he was still alive!
Didja know that the inventor to TNT won the Nobel Peace Prize? And it had nothing to do with dynamite.
Locky - when you say stuff like this it only shows your ignorance & gives less creditability to other statements you make. As Beau points out - TNT was invented by Alfred Nobel the founder of the Nobel Prize & the first peace prize wasn't even given until 1901.
This of course has nothing to do with LSD unless you draw the comparison that TNT blows up buildings & LSD blows your mind
No kidding, this speaks VOLUMES about the kind of people the left wing extremists that pollute this site really are.
We are celebrating a guy who did nothing mre that advance the use of ILLEGAL DRUGS and hurt thousands (if not millions) of people in the process?
SAD. TYPICAL LIBERAL'S WITH THEIR PRIORITIES COMPLETELY F'D UP!
AllSpinDave
Typical knee-jerk reaction from someone who obviously doesn't understand the world around him.
"Hofmann called LSD "medicine for the soul" and was frustrated by the worldwide prohibition that has pushed it underground. "It was used very successfully for 10 years in psychoanalysis," he said, adding that the drug was hijacked by the youth movement of the 1960s and then unfairly demonized by the establishment that the movement opposed. He conceded that LSD can be dangerous in the wrong hands."
"story about the inventor of LSD"
LSD was certainly not "Invented". Furthermore Hoffman certainly was not looking to "invent" and astoundingly powerful hallucinogen nor was he thrilled at the way his "invention" was used.
There are several naturally occuring substances that have similar effects and similar chemical compositions.
May he RIP.
Hilarious,
Hoffman's invention was used by the CIA for interrogation. Just like the water boarding of today, it's a useless as ****** on a bull in order to gain any useful information.
Since it matters to you so much how our nation is functioning and the people that run our government, maybe you can take a gander as to just how we've gotten this far.
Thanks for posting neo!
He comes across as a bit dry in this article though.
I saw him interviewed on the occasion of his 100th birthday and he had a wicked sense of humour and a bold lust for life and described his first "trip" with tremendous relish.
Its also significant that much of his later work consisted of following up on this "accidental" discovery.
He definitely continued to have contact with many of the researchers and others who were advocates for LSD.
For those who choose to focus only on the regrettable deaths associated with LSD ingestion may I suggest that they at least consider the scale of deaths from firearms as a comparison - even just the "accidental" deaths obviously dwarf all the deaths which can be attributed to LSD.
Dang (sniff).
As Tim Leary said on his deathbed: "Why not? Yeah."
You know, I had forgotten, just noticed Hofmann's first intentional dose was taken April 19, 1943, at 4:20pm. I think THAT's where it came from (4:20).
gamahuche:
To the best of my knowledge, there are nil deaths attributed to LSD aside from accident or suicide occurring while under the influence. Okay, found two deaths in medical journals attributed to extremely high intravenous doses--measured in mg's to g's, industrial quantities compared to the usual 300-1000 microgram doses most people are familiar with.
The only deaths I had previously ever heard of actually attributed to the drug and not the mindset of the user were animal experiments, also with extrememly high doses...the elephant having a heart attack comes to mind...
Not to dismiss the suicides and accidents, but the drug itself is non-toxic and non-addictive.
The book, "The Day of St Anthony's Fire" details hundreds od deaths caused by the ingestion of LSD over many centuries. The chemical occurs in Nature--it is a product of a particular strain of ergot which is found in rye and other small grains. Throughout the Middle Ages it was believed that its effects were the result of the Devil working directly among the population of afflicted communities. The last known outbreak occurred in France in 1951, and it led to the imposition of new standards for bakeries in that country.

Albert Hofmann died? Man what a trip!
Alber Hofmann, not to be confused with Abbie Hoffman, one of the most prolific users of LSD.
Dropkick- I knew Abby Hoffman - & he was NOT much more of a user of LSD than anyone else in the 60's - how do you justify your statement?
"...Not much more of a user of LSD than anyone else in the 60's"...I'm guessing that means that he was a pretty heavy user as were you. I already know why you feel compelled to defend Hoffman. Apparently, you guys did drugs together. It was actually a play on the similarity of the two names and the fact that Hoffman was a symbol of the 60s. It was a safe bet that he dropped generous amounts of LSD.
So did Cary Grant...as well as Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Doc Ellis who pitched a no hitter in the world series while under the influence of LSD.
...and all the top baseball players of today are on anabolic steroids. Doesn't make it a good idea.
dkl,
As usual you have a unique perspective of society that allows you to paint everyone with a wide brush.
You can't make an argument. You rant and call people wtih whom you disagree all sorts of ideological names and tags.
Where do you see a name or tag in this post?
mntman,
Doc Ellis was a cocaine user, not LSD. And you're right, he was high when he pitched a no-hitter, according to him.
http://duhonly.blogspot.com/2008/04/doc-ellis-p...
mntman,
I stand corrected.
dkl,
Abbie was no more a symbol of the 60's than MLK, RMN, or "Bull" Connor AND neither of these people have ever been accused of using drugs like LSD.
"I already know why you feel compelled to defend Hoffman. Apparently, you guys did drugs together. "
DropK - I cannot let that response go unanswered - you ignorant fool, hiding behind the anonymity of the net to spew your twisted thoughts.
You don't know me - I never did acid in my life & most of the people who are icons of the 60's didn't either.
You accusing me of being an acidhead is the same as if I said you were an anti-social misanthrope, who when finished posting your tripe probably sits alone in your room masturbating to internet porn.
Take your ignorance & crawl back into your rathole.
FYI, I actually score, with women. Novel concept for a wrinkled up old fart. I know.
DK - cool got some phone #s????
dkl,
And I suppose you got that information from Abbie himself.
Hoffman was a marijuana user. If he did LSD, he sure kept it to himself.
Let's hope it was a "good" trip Ace.
