Climate Change Chokes Oceans »

Rising temperatures have caused oxygen-starved swaths of ocean to expand over the last half-century -- a disturbing trend that, if it continues, could wreak havoc on global fisheries.

May 1, 2008, 2:25 p.m.How does this article square with the recent article regarding NASA's ocean temperature measurements? At least one article on that was posted on Propeller.
The NASA data shows no increase in ocean temperature. This article indicates that there is. From my perspective these contradictory findings need to be reconciled.
Unless explained, such discrepancies lend credence to the view that the science on global warming is not settled. At least they do for me.

"Led by University of Kiel oceanographer Lothar Stramma, researchers analyzed 50 years of ocean oxygen data. The findings, published today in Science, dovetail with predictions made by earlier climate models."
Wow! What a coincidence also from institution based in Kiel, Germany! Except this one points out that the oceans have cooled which squares with the NASA
"New NASA data indicates ocean temperatures â;¦ have cooled slightly since 2003"
"Average temperatures in areas such as California and France may drop over the next 10 years, influenced by colder flows in the North Atlantic, said a report today by the institution based in Kiel, Germany. Temperatures worldwide may stabilize in the period."
The study was based on sea-surface temperatures of currents that move heat around the world, and vary from decade to decade.

May 2, 2008, 12:47 a.m.This regional cooling effect may temporarily neutralize the long- term warming phenomenon caused by heat-trapping greenhouse gases building up around the earth, said Richard Wood, a research scientist at the Met Office Hadley Centre, a U.K. provider of environmental and weather-related servicesâ;¦
"Natural variations over the next 10 years might be heading in the cold direction," Wood said. "If you run the model long enough, eventually global warming will win."â;¦
And if we run the model even longer we ll have an ice age go figure?

May 2, 2008, 5:14 a.m.Don't get too excited, kids. The ocean cooling is hardly unprecedented. It's all about trends.
http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2006/sep/HQ_063...
Researchers found the average temperature of the upper ocean rose by 0.16 degrees Fahrenheit from 1993 to 2003, and then fell 0.055 degrees Fahrenheit from 2003 to 2005. The recent decrease is a dip equal to about one-fifth of the heat gained by the ocean between 1955 and 2003. They analyzed data from a broad array of ocean moorings, floats and shipboard sensors, and supported their results with data from NASA's Jason and Topex/Poseidon satellites.
Lyman said the recent cooling is not unprecedented. "While global ocean temperatures have generally increased over the past 50 years, there have also been substantial decadal decreases," he said. "Other studies have shown that a similar rapid cooling took place from 1980 to 1983. But overall, the long-term trend is warming."

EVERYTHING GOT HOT???
THEN WHAT CAUSED THE ICE AGES???
EVERYTHING GOT TOO COLD....

May 2, 2008, 5:03 p.m.I want you to think about what it would be like today if we had not had petroleum. Just think of the organic material we would have had to raise and destroy EVERY YEAR to run the world economies. Think of the trees that would have to be destroyed if we didn't have petroleum.
Petroleum may have been God's gift to mankind. It is worth NOTHING if we don't use it to generate the energy we need. This is organic material that has decayed over millions of years rather than destroying present vegetation every year.
