Destination Moon »
Posted by: lenseview 3 months, 2 weeks ago...Apollo 17 was the last of NASA's pioneering manned missions to the moon. But even then, no one imagined that it would be more than three decades before humans returned. Later this year, however, NASA plans to launch its first new missions to the moon in more than 35 years....

How pathetic that NASA even still exists! Here's why.
Scientist have predicted that at best, we will use up our resources here on Earth in less than 500 years. Where will humans "propogate the species?" On another planet, they propose! We should give the forest/trees a break, and build homes with steel/aluminum framing, aluminum chopsticks, etc.
75% of the time a space shuttle is launched, we have atmospheric disturbances somewhere in the world. What does this tell us? We shouldn't be upsetting our planet with this foolish endeavor to transplant our decendants to another planet at the expense of the USA national debt!
So we're extinct in 500 years because of our excesses. So what? Serves us right.
And that's the REAL bottom line!

My, my. Don't we have a pessimistic view of the human race and ingenuity?
In 500 years, we will use up the resources we are "currently" using.
We have more coal in the U.S. than the Middle East has oil. Who's to say that in 500 years, we might be able to burn it even cleaner than oil?
Who's to say that in 500 years, we won't have cars running on seawater. We'll never run out of that!
It serves us right to be extinct just because of our excesses? I don't think so. Especially when we have scientists working night and day in their labs working on what I just typed!

I agree with the idea that building on the successful moon exploration is a good first step before moving on to investigate other planets. It allows testing and improvements. Then we can more confidently set our sights on other planets.
It does make sense to initially send robots both as a test of concept and to build our body of knowledge to make space travel fruitful and safe.
We also need to look to other ways to reduce our impact on the earth, especially through birth control, energy-efficient homes and transportation that recycle pollutants, etc. Just reducing the population has had a dramatic positive impact on China.
It also meets the human drive to explore, which brings hope, sparks inspiration, employs people in interesting jobs, and helps us understand our world.
It's already become an international effort, and we have a common problem to solve.

The real reason we're going back to the moon is to pick up all the trash we left up there and we need some more rocks.
That's worth a few billion.
What else would we spend it on? Health care? Infrastructure? Earth's environment?
