Posted By GregD 4 months, 3 weeks ago in Science & TechnologyAstronomers from SRON have discovered mysterious pulses that are being emitted by an extremely magnetic star. The magnetic star, a magnetar, emits the pulses as very high energy X-rays. The astronomers made their observations using the ESA space telescopes INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton and the NASA satellite RXTE.

Magnetars are probably one of the most fascinating and mysterious objects in the universe in my opinion. I've read about their existence for many years, but little is really known about them. It's hard to imagine an object with a magnetic field that's strong enough to instantly rearrange all of the atoms / molecules in your body if you strayed too close. Hopefully GLAST will shed some light on the subject.
